Handcrafted Bamileke shield

Carved and finished by hand in Cameroon, Bamileke shields combine strong graphic forms with the quiet irregularities of craftsmanship. Wood, pigments, beads, cowries or raffia may enter the composition depending on the piece.

The sculptor’s gesture

Before pattern or finish comes the form itself. Wood is shaped progressively by hand, requiring control of proportion, depth and surface. Burning, pigments, kaolin, beadwork or natural fibres may then complete the piece, each technique adding another layer of gesture and material.

From protective object to sculptural presence

The shield carries a long visual history in Cameroon. Reinterpreted in contemporary interiors, its strength lies in the tension between geometry and handwork. No two surfaces are entirely identical, and it is precisely this human irregularity that gives each piece its presence.
